About Us

Dance Trance (DT) is a high-energy dance fitness class that offers the excitement of moving with the beat to choreographed routines. It incorporates jazz, funk, hip-hop, and other movements to the hottest pop, hip-hop, rock and alternative music on and off the radio. It is guaranteed to bring a smile to your face while getting your heart pumping. If you love to dance, this is the class for you!

We are located at Our Y (formerly the YMCA) in Sarasota, FL. We offer classes at both branches of Our Y (Berlin and ESJ), and currently, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we also offer virtual classes via Zoom. Instructors
Candace Sweeney – Director of Dance Trance ESJ

Candace attended her first Dance Trance class in 2006 based on a friend’s recommendation, and she was immediately hooked. She got chills several times during that first class because she knew she’d found what she’d been searching for…an outlet for her love of dance. She started taking nearly every DT class offered in Sarasota, and later, began taking classes in ballet, jazz and hip-hop. She became a DT instructor in 2008 and took over as Director of Dance Trance South in 2020.  She says, “Dance Trance has changed my life! Not only am I in better physical shape than I’ve ever been, but the dancer in me has been awakened and I know now that dance will be a part of my life forever. I was thrilled to become an instructor, and I’m even more excited to become a Director! I hope that by doing this, I can share with others the incredible joy that Dance Trance, and dance in general, have brought to my life. I would also like to encourage even those with no dance experience to try this class. It’s never too late to try something new!”

Courtney Denkin–Director of Dance Trance Berlin

After years of teaching dance teams, aerobics, and cardio taekwondo, Courtney noticed a dance class happening in the gym where she was working out.  As a new empty-nester with extra time on her hands, she decided to check it out.  It was love at first step!  She quickly progressed to taking every DT class offered in Sarasota.  She has thoroughly enjoyed it ever since.  She was thrilled when asked to be an instructor and overjoyed to have the opportunity to become a director.  “The Dance Trance program is so wonderful because of the ever-changing selection of music and dance available.  There is truly something for everyone, and it’s impossible to be bored!  It doesn’t feel like a workout—-it feels like a party!”

Carissa Potts – Dance Trance Instructor

Carissa can’t remember a time when she didn’t love music. She is known among her friends and family as having an…endearing…knack for interrupting conversations with, “Hey! That reminds me of a song.” She is trained in classical piano and viola and has sang in several choirs. Although she dabbled in tap as a child, Carissa didn’t truly discover dance until she was an adult. She attended her first dance trance class in 2014, and she was hooked! The class provided her with something she’d been missing – a creative and physical outlet that was half cardio, half meditation. Happiness! In addition to dance trance, Carissa enjoys reading, British humor, puzzles, and most nerdy pursuits.
