Welcome to the other side of fitness, Dance Trance! If you are looking for a new and exciting workout you have found it!  Dance Trance was created in 1986 by Jay & Beth Handline, and is now spreading across the globe through the Dance Trance License program.  The program was introduced to North Carolina here in Winston Salem in 2010 through Stephanie Kohn, a previous instructor trained by Jay & Beth Handline.  She quickly grew the classes and trained additional instructors (see bios below).  Melissa O’Buch is the current Director of DTWS and is excited to continue to bring the dance party to North Carolina!

Dance Trance is a dance fitness class that incorporates funk, Latin, jazz, and hip hop choreographed to all your favorite music!  The DT choreography is created in a manner that allows students to pick up combinations as they learn.  You will get to see and practice the routines in every class.  You can follow this class without knowing a single step!  The key to Dance Trance is repetition, so the more you come in to any class, the better your execution and your workout!

New to Dance Trance? The DT choreography is created in a manner that allows students to pick up combinations as they learn.  There are no tricked up combinations that are difficult to follow.  No add-on choreography that makes it impossible to learn.  You will get to see and practice the routines in every class. You can follow this class without knowing a single step!  The key to Dance Trance is repetition, so the more you come in to any class, the better your execution and your workout!

Can I drop in as a guest? The YMCA allows new guest with no membership to visit up to three times for free (allow extra time before class to complete paperwork).

    Class Descriptions:
Break Down (DTBD) - This is the perfect class for new Dance Trance students to learn the DT choreography. Advanced students also love this class because they have the opportunity to talk about routines and learn more intricate movements. Break Down (DTBD) is a workout class where each routine is reviewed and “broken down.” Typically there are 2-3 songs introduced, reviewed and repeated per class.  Learning the moves will help you execute and dance stronger and with confidence = more calories burned!

Dance Trance (DT) – Dance Trance is a dance fitness class that requires no dance experience. This is a high energy, great cardio workout that incorporates funk, house, rock Latin, Jazz, hip-hop and other types of rhythm movements to the beats of music from all genres. This is your jam class and does not include much instruction on specific moves. You simply follow along with the instructor.

What do I wear? Students wear dance pants, tees, and anything they feel comfortable dancing in. Gym or aerobic shoes are required for this class.  The smoother the sole, the better for turning purposes, but you also need shoes that aren’t too slick in order to have some traction.  Running shoes are not recommended for this class due to the heavy side movement and turning.  Our favorites include the Reebok Zig series and the Nike Free series, but there are several other great shoes out there.

    Instructor Bios:
    Melissa O’Buch, Director

Melissa was an avid dancer throughout childhood including jazz, tap, ballet, and high school dance team.  Too many years sitting at a desk and two children later, she attended a Dance Trance class with a former high school dance team friend and was immediately hooked.  She’ll tell you that “Dance Trance provided a thorough cardio workout, but also kept my ever wandering mind engaged, making the workout fun and something I wanted (rather than hated) to do!”  Under Stephanie Kohn’s inspiring leadership, Melissa began going to every Dance Trance class offered, even altering her work schedule to make Thursday 4:30 classes.  The positive changes both physically and mentally were overwhelming to her.  When Stephanie announced she would be leaving, Melissa knew she couldn’t let Dance Trance leave with her and insisted on continuing to support the amazing community that Stephanie created.  Dance Trance is much more than your average fitness class!

    Jamie Forsey, Instructor

Jamie’s passion for dance began when she was four years old.  After college, she never seemed to find an activity to fill her dance void.  When a friend told Jamie about a new dance class being offered at the Y, she knew she had to check it out.  All it took was one class, and she realized she had finally found her passion again. “Dance Trance is the perfect combination of cardio and dance and it never gets boring.  The loud music, the challenging choreography, and the fabulous friends that surround you make Dance Trance the best workout in town.”  Jamie has been involved with Dance Trance since 2011.

    Anna LiAnna Livingstonvingston, Instructor

Before joining the Dance Trance family, the only time you would find Anna dancing was at a wedding. But since trying her first class in February of 2012, there isn’t a day that goes by that she isn’t in a class or practicing in her living room. “The Dance Trance community has brought so much to my life. I look forward to letting go of my worries on the dance floor and seeing people who I genuinely care about all in one place. Stephanie used to say that Dance Trance provides you with an opportunity to express yourself artistically, which most adults don’t get to do very often. I couldn’t agree more. Dance is an outlet in so many different ways.” Come check out a class and join our community!

Sandi Cauley, Director/Owner Sandi grew up in South Texas and danced Ballet Folklorico (Mexican folk dancing) as a child. But after years of lessons, ornate costumes and recitals gave it up to join the neighborhood girls who were playing soccer. Her love of music and choreography however continued through another outlet – marching band, where she played snare drum in both high school and college. After college, Sandi’s career in television news moved her to Virginia Beach, Birmingham, Sarasota and ultimately Richmond. During her travels – Sandi tore her ACL playing soccer and searched for another way to work out and that brought her to Dance Trance.

She first started as a student in DT Birmingham meeting Jay and Beth Handline in 1998. When the Handlines moved to Florida, Sandi soon followed and licensed the Sarasota studio in 2001 with frequent visits to Jacksonville to work with the Handlines. Sandi later returned to Virginia and opened the Richmond location at Gold’s Gym and then moved it to Rigby’s Jig. Now you can find her instructing class and contributing choreography to the DT Nation. “Dance Trance is truly woven into my life. I’ve danced to de-stress from work. I’ve danced to keep fit before, during, and after all three of my pregnancies. I’ve danced to let my inner B-Boy out but what’s more fantastic is getting to do it with some of the best people I know and love.”

Chinda TilsonAfter years of growing up and cheerleading for local rec leagues, Chinda always had a passion for structured movements and choreography. 10 years ago, while doing the boring treadmill routine, she heard the fun Top 40 hits cranking out of the fitness room and noticed a fun group of sweaty/smiley faces jamming out to one of her favorite songs. She watched enviously and left the gym with the DT schedule in her hand. After taking her first Dance Trance class, she found the challenge of learning the songs and mastering the choreography a blast and it’s what kept her coming back class after class. Chinda works full time for a non-profit agency, shuttles her two kids around town to various sports/gymnastics trainings, and supporting her husband’s rugby team. Dance Trance is the one place where she can shed the work suit, mommy hat, and wife duties and really take time for herself. “I lose myself in the music and dance my stress away! I leave class feeling sexy, invigorated, and full of energy!” Chinda also loves that Dance Trance welcomes people of all sizes, shapes, and fitness levels. “I love seeing new students come out of their shell! Once they get the hang of the program they’re hooked for life!” Her favorite part of Dance Trance? The friendships she’s made for the last 10 years. “We’ve been to DT weddings, DT baby showers, and welcomed DT babies and have watched them grow to DT pre-teens! We’ve shared life’s ups and downs together. I love my instructor family and I love that we’re always there for each other!”

Becca Washburn Becca has been dancing since the age of eleven. She studied in her hometown of South Hill, VA under the Royal Academy of Dancing syllabus of training at Southside School of Ballet. In college at Radford University, she took ballet, modern and jazz classes each semester as a ‘stress reliever.’ After college she moved to Richmond and looked for a place to meet new people and stay in shape. In 2005 she joined Gold’s Gym and worked out on the machines for two days until she saw there was a dance class called Dance Trance. “After my first DT class I knew this was for me. I didn’t know what I was doing but I loved the music and had to keep coming back. I became an instructor in April 2007. Dance Trance for me is not just dance, not just a workout, it is so much more. This is the place I can come after work and let it all go. I have made so many wonderful friends and the DT family will always stay close in my heart.”

    Holly Saunders
Holly started dancing at age 3 at Fredericksburg Ballet Center with an emphasis and a love for ballet and jazz. At age 15, she decided to continue with her jazz studies on the side, but hung up the pointe shoes for good. Her true passion turned to the competitive sports arena with soccer, tennis, and cheerleading, however; after college, she knew something was missing from her life….Dancing! Holly found Dance Trance by accident after joining Gold’s Gym to get back in shape. “It is now a part of my life that I could never live without. I am in the best shape of my life, I get to do what I love 4 times a week, and I have made life-long friends in this program.” Holly was asked to be an instructor for DT Fitness in October of 2006, and with that, she can only hope that others will see the passion she has for dance, and that they will be as equally inspired by what this program has to offer. “Dance Trance is, by far, the best dance program I have ever been a part of.”

Sarah Barrow From three to sixteen, Sarah took dance classes at Richmond’s West End Academy of Dance, and continued to dance until she was 22 at Virginia Commonwealth University. Afterwards, she fell into the same rut most dancers find themselves in, and couldn’t find any adult dance classes in the Richmond area. That all changed when Sarah found Dance Trance at Gold’s Gym.  “It was great: hip hop, jazz, funk! It wasn’t an add-on exercise class, it was a dance fitness class and I loved it! Shortly thereafter, Sandi asked me to choreograph a routine and over time I became an instructor. Due to injuries, I’ve sadly had to leave DT a couple times, but I always come back! It’s a fabulous class with wonderful people!”

Cortney Carroll Cortney started dancing when she was four years old and never stopped. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance from Wright State University specializing in ballet, modern, tap, jazz, and musical theater. Cortney went on to dance professionally with various theaters, dance troupes, and even a minor league baseball team. Cortney is a wife and mom of two and is currently teaching Creative Movement to preschoolers at West Hampton Day Academy and Promises Preschool.  Cortney only recently relocated to Virginia from Ohio and says she began searching for a dance aerobics class immediately, “I was looking for a class that was fun, a great workout, and challenging and yet with Dance Trance I found so much more!!!!!  I was hooked after my first class!”

Clinton Spell II Clinton has been obsessed with all things music related since birth. He began dancing as a toddler, and soon after began writing, composing, and recording his own music. While never formally trained, his passion for dance lead him to perform in numerous talent shows as a child. He later combined his love for music and dance in high school, becoming captain (and later choreographer) for two of Manchester High School’s national competing show choirs, and being cast in several of their Drama department’s musicals. Later, Clinton decided to attend Full Sail University in Florida, where he received an Associate’s degree in Recording Engineering. After returning home to RVA and landing a job as manager at a local recording studio, Clinton became bored with his regular exercise routine, and longed to find a dance class that allowed for a good workout, while not being stiff and uptight. He received a coupon for Dance Trance, decided to give it a shot, and the rest is history. He’s been addicted to DT ever since, and now instructs classes, as well as helping choreograph new routines.  “I feel really lucky to have found such a great group of people in Dance Trance, and I’m so thankful for Sandi bringing the DT Nation to RVA and allowing me to join her amazing team.”

Deverly Hargress Deverly first started dancing when she was enrolled in ballet at age four, but admits, it didn’t keep her attention. Her parents instead tried African dance classes and that did the trick. Deverly stayed with it for the next six years but her love of dancing continued to grow. Deverly found Dance Trance Richmond in 2009, when she joined Gold’s Gym to lose the weight she had gained from traveling for work. Without knowing what she was getting into, Dev randomly decided to try Dance Trance Breakdown (DT 101) figuring it was a basic aerobic/jazz class but soon learned she was wrong. Dev says, “I thought I was in some type of Lakers-girls-tryout class. It was challenging and fun at the same time and I was hooked and determined to memorize as much as I could to catch up with the rest of the ladies.” Deverly became an instructor soon after and says she loves it. “It’s a great workout and it’s a physical and mental exercise every time. Good escape from some of the stresses of life. Truly, my favorite part is seeing people who were once strangers, become friends just because of one common factor, which is dance.”
